Resilience: Distinct Construct or Conglomerate of Existing Traits?

Abstract: Since its inception in mainstream scientific psychology, resilience has emerged as a popular, yet controversial, construct. As evidenced in the target article, this controversy can be attributed, at least in part, to current conceptual and methodological difficulties hampering understanding of the construct. Chief among these concerns is the discriminant validity of resilience with respect to conceptually similar individual differences constructs, such as hardiness, mental toughness, adaptability, and even the… Show more

“…The view that burnout and depression are distinct entities may thus reflect the jangle fallacy , that is, the erroneous assumption that two constructs are dissimilar because they are labeled differently (Bianchi et al ., in press). The jangle fallacy is likely to occur when a supposedly new construct is released without a careful consideration of the existing literature (Fogarty & Perera, ). Judging from the seminal articles on burnout (e.g., Freudenberger, ; Maslach, ), no comprehensive review of the literature dedicated to already described stress‐related conditions was conducted prior to the release of the construct.…”

“…All in all, these findings support the view that burnout overlaps with depression (Taris, 2006 ; Ahola et al, 2014 ; Bianchi et al, 2017a , b , f ). Construct proliferation—a violation of the scientific canon of parsimony—has become a major problem in psychology (Schmidt, 2010 ), particularly in work and organizational psychology (Le et al, 2010 ; Cole et al, 2012 ; Allen et al, 2014 ; Newman and Harrison, 2015 ; Fogarty and Perera, 2016 ; Shaffer et al, 2016 ; Taris et al, 2017 ). We recommend that greater attention be paid to this problem that threatens theory building and transdisciplinary communication (Bianchi et al, 2017d ).…”

“…On the other hand, resilience has been considered a function or behavioural outcome [ 8 ], while fewer commentators consider it to be a two-stage process allowing people to adapt [ 9 , 10 ]. In the current study, following Fogarty and Perera, resilience was conceptualized as a distinguishing and very stable personality characteristic [ 11 ].…”
