Resilience in engineered resilient systems

Abstract: Dynamically transforming mission contexts in conjunction with ever-increasing budgetary constraints provides great impetus for the Department of Defense (DoD) to identify resilient systems early in the design process. The engineered resilient systems (ERS) community of interest (COI) research efforts focus on identifying and quantifying methods to perform systems engineering analysis in a model-based physics-driven environment. Research conducted has approached resiliency from various perspectives, including i… Show more

“…Using this logic, we are able to include a large number of relevant documents within this review that may have otherwise been missed, enabling a more comprehensive assessment of SBD. We refer to this set of documents as Group B from this point forward 1,66–122 . We provide the complete listing for all Group B documents in Table 2.…”

“…The literature identifies critical links between engineered resiliency systems and several of the systems engineering ilities, specifically flexibility, robustness, and versatility . A significant amount of literature, outside of the systems engineering domain, discusses human resiliency and the resiliency of natural systems . Francis and Bekera proposed a framework for assessing the resiliency of system based on the system performance.…”

“…In addition, these systems must learn from their environment to deliver full value to the stakeholders . These examples focus on mission resiliency for systems; however, platform resiliency is also an important attribute for systems to react to disruptions over a greater duration of time . Despite a focus on DoD systems, resiliency also applies to systems outside of the DoD and efforts to model resiliency also apply to other systems such as infrastructure networks …”

“…(Madni, 2012) As a response to the need for resilient systems, the Department of Defense (DoD) created the Engineering Resilient Systems (ERS) program. (Goerger, Madni, & Eslinger, 2014) (Buchanan, et al, 2016) ERS focuses on the effective and efficient design and development of complex resilient engineered systems throughout their lifecycle. ERS research focuses on defining engineering resilience to enable key stakeholders such as planners, concept developers, systems designers, system engineers, program managers, and system acquisition leaders to assess options to improve system resilience in the in the early life cycle stages.…”
