Resilient, Decentralized V2V Online Stop-Free Strategy in a Complex Roundabout

Abstract: Road intersections are considered to be bottlenecks for urban transportation whose impacts are longer travel times and wasted human resources. In this paper we focus on vehicle to vehicle communications (V2V) that allow exchanging data between vehicles. Considering that vehicles are controlled by drivers (not autonomous), we do not pretend to take control of them, nor is the goal to avoid collision or improve safety, as is often done elsewhere. By eliminating the potential overlaps of vehicular trajectories co… Show more

“…Allow imagining solutions for crossing an intersection or a roundabout more efficiently. With decentralized coordination between vehicles based on the freedom degrees that each vehicle has available to avoid collision [60]. A design of traffic simulation models for such vehicles for exchanging information to reduce the average delay and minimize traffic congestion for vehicles could be clearly seen in [48,[61][62][63][64][65]].…”

“…To deal with these issues, some research related have been carried out following various approaches rather than adopting the standard traffic light system. In [16], a decentralized vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) approach, which connects human-driven vehicles together, has been presented to eliminate the potential overlaps out of vehicular paths. Assuming that the vehicles head toward the roundabout in steady velocities, that is inapplicable.…”

“…Reference [99] demonstrated the potential of communication between vehicles in a complex roundabout and test the connection strength of that network. The authors in [100] and [101] investigated the data collection problem in VANETs under rapid evolving traffic conditions using grouping models over different propagation environments.…”

“…Such systems are used to prevent road traffic accidents and collision and provide assistance to drivers on the road [3], [4], [24], [29], [33], [34], [58], [71], [74], [81], [85], [89], [124], [127], [131]. V2V communication systems allow vehicles to share state information with one another to improve safety, comfort and efficiency of transportation networks [8], [12], [15], [18], [20], [28], [54], [59], [76], [87], [112]; provide safety-oriented applications for vehicle and pedestrian on tablets and smartphones [2], [35] and IoV [109]; and provide safety assurance strategies for resolving intervehicle conflicts at unsignalised intersections [93], [115] and road intersections [99]. A shockwave system has significant influence on freeway capacity and safety.…”
