Resins and additives for powder coatings and alkyd paints, based on renewable resources

Abstract: Due to limited fossil resources and an increased need for environmentally friendly, sustainable technologies, the importance of using renewable feedstocks in the paint and coatings area will increase in the decades to come. This paper highlights some of the perspectives in this area. Alkyd resins for high-solid paints and reactive diluents, completely based on commercially available renewable resources, were prepared and characterized. Alkyd resins based on sucrose and unsaturated fatty acids or oils showed a … Show more

“…It was suggested that trinuclear Fe species are formed that can lead to reactivity with the substrate only if one the iron centers is reduced to Fe II [42,43]. In addition, coating and paint drying tests were conducted using an Fe-soap/ascorbic acid mixture [44,45]. Similar or even improved drying times were observed as compared to the standard Co II (2-EH) 2 drier.…”

“…Only the highly activated bistriflate, [18] obtained by reacting isomannide 1 with trifluorosulfonic anhydride (Tf 2 O) and pyridine in dichloromethane, gave the desired dinitrile (3, Scheme 2). The absolute stereochemistry of the product (exo-exo conformation) was confirmed by 1D and 2D 1 H NMR, 13 C NMR, as well as single crystal X-ray diffraction ( Figure 2). …”

“…1 H NMR (delay time 5 s, 32 scans, 90°) and 13 C NMR (delay time 1 s, 2000 scans) spectroscopy measurements were performed on a Agilent 400-MR NMR system in DMSO-d 6 . Data were acquired using VnmrJ3 software.…”

“…With depleting oil reserves, efforts are made to replace these starting materials with bio-based alternatives to create more sustainable polyesters. [11][12][13][14][15][16] Storage of the powder paint imposes requirements on the glass transition temperature (T g ) value of the used polymer resin, which has to be significantly higher than ambient temperature. Storage above the T g of the powder will cause fusion of the particles, decreasing the ability of the coating to level well or even completely hampering paint application.…”
