Resistance development, stability, cross‐resistance potential, biological fitness and biochemical mechanisms of spinetoram resistance in Thrips hawaiiensis (Thysanoptera: Thripidae)

Abstract: The current study expands understanding of spinosyn resistance in thrips species, providing a basis for proposing better integrated pest management strageties for thrips control programs and defining the most appropriate tools for such resistance management. © 2018 Society of Chemical Industry.

“…Chemical insecticides have always been the primary tool for T. hawaiiensis control, especially the high number of specific treatments applied on banana and mango crops [ 9 , 10 , 11 ]. T. hawaiiensis showed the potential to rapidly develop resistance to insecticides (e.g., spinetoram) under laboratory selection [ 9 , 10 ].…”

“…As a polyphagous flower-inhabiting thrips in China, T. hawaiiensis is always the dominant thrips pest on many banana and mango orchards during their flowering stages [ 9 , 10 , 11 , 20 ]. In addition, T. hawaiiensis varies in its population size on different flower host plants and vegetable crops at the flowering stage and particularly showed a preference for Gardenia jasminoides Ellis (Gentianales: Rubiaceae) flowers [ 21 , 22 ].…”

“…Since the broad-spectrum activity that provides long-lasting control of insect pests (Hymenoptera, Diptera, Siphonaptera, Lepidoptera and Thysanoptera) in a variety of crops [ 22 27 ], the high effectiveness of spinetoram to rice pests [ 28 ], noctuidae pests [ 29 ], stored-product pests [ 30 – 32 ], and thrips [ 33 35 ] has been assessed since its introduction. By comparing with spinosad, spinetoram has been found to be more effective [ 25 , 26 , 36 ] against lots of important insect pests.…”
