Resorcinol Functionalized Gold Nanoparticles for Formaldehyde Colorimetric Detection

Abstract: Gold nanoparticles functionalized with resorcinol moieties have been prepared and used for detecting formaldehyde both in solution and gas phases. The detection mechanism is based on the color change of the probe upon the aggregation of the nanoparticles induced by the polymerization of the resorcinol moieties in the presence of formaldehyde. A limit of detection of 0.5 ppm in solution has been determined. The probe can be deployed for the detection of formaldehyde emissions from composite wood boards.

“…As a result, the degree of AuNP aggregation is a direct reflection of the target concentration and can be observed by the red to purple-blue color change in the AuNP solution. Based on the similar strategies, the label-free colorimetric detection of various targets, including proteins [77,78,79,80], small organic molecules [81,82,83], and ions, such as silver (I) [84], cadmium (II) [85] and potassium (I) [86], has been explored extensively.…”

“…UV/Vis spectrophotometer, spectrofluorometer). Based on the reaction between formaldehyde and primary amines, several colorimetric probes including resorcinol functionalized AuNPs, 11 dyes, 12,13 and fluorescent probes were demonstrated to be good candidates for formaldehyde detection. 14–16 Instead of the more complicated preparation of optical probes, colorimetric methods based on Tollens' reaction require simpler reagents, such as silver ions and base.…”
