Resource provisioning for cloud PON AWGR-based data center architecture

Abstract: Abstract-Recent years have witnessed an ever-increasing growth for cloud computing services and applications housed by data centers. PON based optical interconnects for data center networks is a promising technology to offer high bandwidth, efficient utilization of resources, reduced latency and reduced energy consumption compared to current data center networks based on electronic switches. This paper presents our proposed scheme for data center interconnection to manage intra/inter communication traffic base… Show more

“…Scalability: From the market-perspective, the ability to support a rapid growth of dynamic service demands, without compromising the network's efficiency and the network cost is a critical issue. Converting both infrastructure and operational costs into a scalable expenses that reflect the actual use of the resources is a promising option for many operators, especially those interested in getting more while spending less in their infrastructures [19]. Moreover, the logically infinite on-demand capacities of the cloud DCNs represents another attractive feature that provides fast support for any immediate-demanding applications to be deployed easily, without complex management and time consuming operations.…”

“…The first main segment of the network is the rack and it is defined as a PON group. In a PON group a number of servers say 16 -32 are connected together via one of the three technologies depicted in Figure 1(c) and described in details in [2] and [14].…”

“…The work in [13] demonstrated the optimization mathematical results for minimizing the power consumption of a PON cell through efficient placement of Virtual Machines (VM). In [14], further investigation of the design presented in [9] and [12] is carried. The work tackled the problem of resource provisioning optimization for cloud applications addressing delay and non-delay sensitive applications.…”

“…Optical data centre architectures, precisely Passive Optical Networks (PONs), with their proven performance in access networks can provide efficient solutions to support connectivity inside modern data centres [1]. In this regard, we proposed different novel PON architectures to manage the inter-rack and intra-rack communication of a data centre as in [2][3][4][5][6]. In this paper, we further study one of the PON designs proposed in [6] where routing is performed by Arrayed Waveguide Grating Routers (AWGRs) and servers.…”
