Resource space model, OWL and database

Abstract: Semantics exhibits diversity in the real world, mental abstraction world, document world, and machine world. Studying mappings between different forms of semantics helps unveil the uniformity in the diversity. This article investigates the mappings between three typical semantic models: the Web ontology language (OWL), relational database model, and resource space model (a classification-based semantic model). By establishing mappings between the semantic primitives of the three models, we study the mapping fr… Show more

“…Some examples are typical operating systems [4], Resource Description Framework (RDF) [5], Representational State Transfer (REST) [6], the resource space model (RSM) [7], entity-relationship model [17] and the Resource Description Template (RDT) [10]. In all models, the designers try to express all attributes by describing the resources in different views.…”

“…(4) RSM [7] is a special resource description method that treats any resource as an entity located in a multi-dimensional space, where each dimension is one resource attribute. This resource model is at the logical layer to describe the resources and suitable for applications, like search engines.…”

“…One of the approaches to deal with metadata has been proposed by the Semantic Open Grid Service Architecture (S-OGSA), which extends OGSA by defining a lightweight mechanism that allows for the explicit use of semantics along the associated knowledge services to support a spectrum of service capabilities [27,28]. Another approach is that of the Knowledge Grid [29][30][31], which also acknowledges the need for explicit management of knowledge resources and metadata in Grids.…”

“…Making use of classification and link is the natural way to manage Web resources. Multi-dimensional classifications, called Resource Space Model, have been used to manage various resources [13][14][15][16]. It is the theory, model and method that can organize Web resources for faceted navigation.…”
