Respiratory activity for the differentiation of vigor on soybean seeds lots

Abstract: -Currently, the highest interest with respect to the assessment of seed physiological quality is to obtain reliable results in a relatively short period of time. This initiative allows for prompt decisions during different phases of seed production primarily after physiological maturity. This research was performed to verify the efficiency and rapidity of the method of Pettenkofer to determine the respiratory activity and to differentiate vigor levels of soybean seed lots. Three lots of soybean seeds cv. 8000 … Show more

“…According to Mendes et al (2009) this test is an alternative or an important complement to the traditional tests for the determinations of seeds lots vigor, because it is a practical, simple and cheap test. So, in seeds with high vigor were observed the higher values of respiration by the liberation of CO 2 characterizing the integrity of mitochondria.…”

“…Furthermore, it presents a considerable quality seeds. It is an important complementary test compared to the traditional one for determining vigor of seeds lots (Mendes et al, 2009;Dode et al, 2012). Another way to verify the processes related to seeds quality is the evaluation of enzymatic activity of respiratory route.…”

“…Respiratory activity is measured through the consumption of oxygen, calorimetry, and carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) content released by the respiratory process via titration, fluorescence, and gas chromatography (Mendes et al, 2009;Schabes & Sigstad, 2011). However, these methods require time, skilled labor and present high operational costs, limiting their diffusion in seed analysis and laboratory routines.…”
