Response and Effect Traits of Coral Reef Fish

Abstract: The response-and-effect framework is a trait-based approach that seeks to break down the mechanistic links between ecosystem disturbances, species' traits, and ecosystem processes. We apply this framework to a review of the literature on coral reef fish traits, in order to illustrate the research landscape and structure a path forward for the field. Traits were categorized into five broad groupings: behavioral, life history, morphological, diet, and physiological. Overall, there are fewer studies linking effec… Show more

“…In such case, species extinctions could cause functional losses to SW Atlantic reef fish assemblages. Exploring a direct causal link between traits and functions through experimental and empirical approaches could strengthen inferences on resilience and reef ecosystems functioning 37,39 avoiding oversimplifications and underestimates of functional loss. Our results should not minimize the importance of corals neither for fish occurrence nor for the persistence of resilient assemblages.…”

“…‘Response framework’), as well as signaling potential shifts in core ecological processes that underpin the transfer of energy and materials (i.e. ‘Effect framework’) 69 (details on trait levels and their expected role are provided in Table S3 ). Missing trait values were inferred from conspecific species, generally from the same geographic area, based on the published literature and the author’s combined knowledge of the species.…”

“…Seven species-level fish traits were evaluated in this paper: body length (size), diet, schooling behaviour (gregariousness), position in the water column, reef association, and length at maturity. These traits were carefully selected according to whether they were likely to respond to protection from fishing and affect ecosystem functioning 11 (see trait inclusion justification; Supplementary Table S1 ). The trait-based analysis was based on abundance data, as species level biomass estimates were not possible from the survey methodology, and the literature on trait-based ecology favours abundance-weighting 15 .…”

“…“Functional traits” are suggestive of the mechanistic links between species’ responses to disturbances and management practices and their potential effects on ecosystem processes 11 . The first step in applying a trait-based approach is therefore to carefully select the traits most applicable to the ecological processes and research questions of interest.…”
