Response Time to Stimuli in Division I Soccer Players

Abstract: The purpose of this investigation was to examine the effect of auditory stimuli (AS) and visual stimuli (VS) on sprint time, sprint speed, and reaction time in National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I male soccer players. Fifteen healthy subjects (mean age 22.1 ± 1.6 years) volunteered for the study. This experiment was conducted on a regulation soccer field, using a wireless timing system. Subjects stood on a touch-and-release pad and were instructed a prompt (AS: "go" command via a microphone inte… Show more

“…However, the single comparisons between groups (Figure 10c,d and Figure 11c,d) highlight that no specific macro-groups can be identified, concerning reaction times. These insights are in contrast with recent findings [20,21], probably due to the small number of subjects analyzed in the mentioned studies.…”

“…Neither individual nor team athletes encounter a light-based stimulus in their respective sport although track athletes, namely sprinters and hurdlers, need to instantaneously respond to the auditory signal of a starting pistol [22][23][24]. However, this is a simple stimulus compared with the more complex visual, auditory (verbal communication), and kinesthetic stimuli experienced by athletes when confronting an opponent [25][26][27][28][29]. Furthermore, the group of individual athletes also included tennis players and judokas who, like team athletes, react to the external stimuli generated by an opponent.…”

“…1 The measurement of reaction time has for a long time been of interest in certain sports such as the 100 m sprint in which reaction times (to the starter's gun) can be an important determinant of success, as races are often decided by hundredths of a second. 2,3 In more recent times RT has come to the fore in the area of assessing sports concussions, which has become a big issue in contact sports. 4 Various factors such as nutrition, training, age gender exercise, hand dominance and fatigue have been found to influence ones reaction time.…”
