Resting-state brain activity in Chinese boys with low functioning autism spectrum disorder

Abstract: BackgroundThis study aimed to explore the resting-state fMRI changes in Chinese boys with low functioning autism spectrum disorder (LFASD) and the correlation with clinical symptoms.MethodsThe current study acquired resting-state fMRI data from 15 Chinese boys with LFASD and 15 typically developing (TD) boys to examine the local brain activity using the regional homogeneity (ReHo) and amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF) indexes; the researchers also examined these measures and their possible relation… Show more

“…ReHo is a method that uses Kendall’s coefficient of concordance (KCC) to measure the similarity of the time series of a given voxel with its 26 nearest neighbors in the brain. ReHo, which can reflect the strength of local spontaneous neural activity in the brain, was used in the study of ASD ( Paakki et al, 2010 ; Shukla et al, 2010 ; Itahashi et al, 2015 ; Li et al, 2018 ), but the results were heterogeneous. Jao Keehn et al (2019) also used the ReHo analysis and found that there was spontaneous nerve activity enhancement in the pericalcarine visual cortex in adolescent patients with ASD (8–18 years old).…”

“…Individuals with ASD not only exhibited local underconnectivity in the right pMTG, but also showed a significant association between disrupted local connectivity in this region and social interaction [Itahashi et al, ]. However, increased degree centrality in the left MTG [Lee, Park, James, Kim, & Park, ] and increased amplitude of low‐frequency fluctuation in the right MTG [Li, Rossbach, Jiang, & Du, ] were identified in individuals with ASD. Although all these studies confirmed the dysfunctional activity of the MTG in ASD, the results are contradictory in terms of whether they showed hyperconnectivity or hypoconnectivity.…”
