Resting-State Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging Networks as a Quantitative Metric for Impact of Neurosurgical Interventions

Abstract: Objective: Resting-state functional MRI (rs-fMRI) has been used to evaluate brain network connectivity as a result of intracranial surgery but has not been used to compare different neurosurgical procedures. Laser interstitial thermal therapy (LITT) is an alternative to conventional craniotomy for the treatment of brain lesions such as tumors and epileptogenic foci. While LITT is thought of as minimally invasive, its effect on the functional organization of the brain is still under active investigation and its… Show more

“…Similarly, resting-state fMRI has been frequently used to define the topography of networks associated with language and motor behavior ( Hacker et al, 2019 ; Kumar et al, 2020 ; Mitchell et al, 2020 ; Daniel et al, 2021 ; Yang P. et al, 2021 ). Commonly, these studies employ seed-based correlation ( Figure 7 ) analyses to define the boundaries of these networks for the purpose of surgical planning ( Hacker et al, 2019 ).…”

“…These topographies are sometimes referred to as resting state networks (RSNs). [19][20][21] Rs-fMRI and T-fMRI are fundamentally distinct in terms of their analytical approach and methodology. RS-fMRI centers on the spontaneous fluctuations in blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) signals observed during a resting state, devoid of any specific task execution, as opposed to T-fMRI, which measures brain activity by comparing BOLD signals during specific tasks to baseline periods.…”
