Results From the Periodontitis and Vascular Events (PAVE) Study: A Pilot Multicentered, Randomized, Controlled Trial to Study Effects of Periodontal Therapy in a Secondary Prevention Model of Cardiovascular Disease

Abstract: Background-In the Periodontitis and Vascular Events (PAVE) pilot study, periodontal therapy was provided as an intervention in a secondary cardiac event prevention model through five coordinated cardiac-dental centers.

“…Several authors have examined the possibility that rigorous preventive and periodontal care is needed to reduce the cardiovascular risk (26) as well as to improve biomarkers and CVD outcomes (27) and that periodontal therapy has a positive effect in reducing serum C-reactive protein levels and improving the endothelial function (27,28). Therefore, the diagnosis of periodontitis in population and its treatment and maintenance should be of utmost importance in order to reduce the risk for CHD.…”

“…The PAVE study showed that periodontal treatment decreases the serum concentration of CRP in the blood, and the effect was observed six months after treatment (odds ratio 0.26; 95% confidence interval: 0.09-0.72) [21,22]. In our study, all patients (complete and incomplete sanation) had professional hygienisation during a first visit to the dentist.…”

“…Recently, clinical trials have shown a significant reduction of CPR levels and other inflammatory markers in serum after periodontal therapy [50]. Furthermore, a multi-centered randomized control study showed that periodontal therapy can reduce the CRP levels from high to moderate in non-obese periodontal disease patients [51]. Similar results confirmed by a randomized controlled trial that the levels of CRP reduced after periodontal therapy [52].…”
