Resumption in Igbo: Two types of resumptives, complex phi-mismatches, and dynamic deletion domains

Abstract: This paper investigates the morphosyntax of resumption in Igbo (Benue-Congo). The first part addresses the syntax and argues that Igbo has two types of resumptive pronouns (RPs): (i) RPs that terminate base-generation Ā-dependencies, and (ii) RPs at the bottom of Ā-movement dependencies. While similar splits have been claimed to exist in a few other languages, established with a limited data set, Igbo provides pervasive evidence for the co-existence of both types within the same language: type-(ii) RPs occur i… Show more

“…To show the promise of an Africanist perspective in this regard, it suffices to mention a number of apparent violations of the Coordinate Structure Constraint in African languages. Possible Āextraction from Coordinate NP constructions is documented in Igbo, in which clausal domains including sentential subjects, complex NPs and adjunct clauses all have the status of islands (Georgi and Amaechi 2020;Goldsmith 1981), and Medumba (Keupdjio 2020). In the same vein, Khoekhoegowab shows an asymmetry in extraction from VP conjuncts where the object can topicalize from the first conjunct but not from the second (Kusmer 2018).…”
