Resveratrol Attenuates Learning, Memory, and Social Interaction Impairments in Rats Exposed to Arsenic

Abstract: Arsenic (As) toxicity has deleterious effects on human health causing disorder in the brain. The aim of this study was to investigate the possible neuroprotective effect of resveratrol (RSV) on arsenic-induced neurotoxicity in rats. Neurotoxicity in rats was developed by treating As 10 mg/kg/day for 21 days orally. Animals were put into seven groups: control, vehicle, As, As+RSV10, As+RSV20 mg/kg, RSV10, and RSV20 mg/kg. Behavioral assessments such as the social interaction test, novel object recognition test,… Show more

“…On the other hand, the animals with RSVL registered locomotor improvements in the habituation stage compared to the control group. By showing a greater speed and a greater distance traveled in the experimentation box, this supports the theory that chronic RSVL treatment promotes neurophysiological changes that benefit motor behavior as well as short-and long-term memory (Taheri Zadeh et al, 2021).…”

“…Other reports refer that RSVL improves vascular functions, activates sirtuins (Moraes et al., 2020), and induces the synthesis of neurotrophic factors such as brain‐derived neurotrophic factor (Tang et al., 2020). Taken together, all these events contribute to the improvement in motor and memory function, which is severely affected in aging (Monserrat Hernández‐Hernández et al., 2016; Taheri Zadeh et al., 2021).…”

“…Increased levels of antioxidants (FRAP and GSH) could neutralise free radicals and prevent inflammatory responses [ 70 ] that are released by an excessive level of adipose tissue in obesity. Thus, increased levels of GSH and FRAP in the hypothalamus may reverse memory decline and ease anxiety-like behaviour [ 71 ]. This is because GSH acts as a protective shield for neurons from stress disturbance [ 72 ], while FRAP prevents memory deficits by reversing the deprivation of neurotransmitters [ 73 ].…”

“…Considering the high number of people worldwide consuming water contaminated with arsenic as well as its neurotoxic properties, scientists decided to utilize arsenic to induce CNS dysfunctions in rodents and investigate whether supplementation with resveratrol could reverse the observed changes (Mehta et al, 2021; Taheri Zadeh et al, 2021). Arsenic administered for prolonged periods caused cognitive impairments and anxiety‐like behaviors in animals.…”
