Pharmaceutical Corporation in San Diego; however, the opinion expressed here are solely his and not necessarily those of the Corporation. Jean G. Riess received his chemical engineer and doctorat-e `s-sciences degrees (the latter with Professor Guy Ourisson in 1963) from the University of Strasbourg. He then spent two years with John Van Wazer at Monsanto in Saint-Louis, MO, learning some phosphorus and transitionmetal chemistry. In 1968 he became Professor at the University of Nice, France, where he founded, directed, and eventually became honorary director of the Unite ´de Chimie Mole ´culaire (associated with the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique). His research successively involved phosphorus chemistry, transition-metal chemistry, organometallics, and eventually perfluorochemicals. His present interests are in fluorocarbons, fluorinated amphiphiles, and their colloid chemistry, including fluorocarbon emulsions for in vivo O 2 delivery, fluorinated self-assemblies, and drug delivery systems. Professor Riess has published about 360 papers and holds ca. 25 patents. He has served on numerous councils and committees and has chaired or co-chaired international conferences on phosphorus chemistry and blood substitutes. He has won awards from the French Academy of Sciences, French Chemical Society, Alexander von Humboldt Stifftung, City of Nice and Controlled Release Society, as well as Alliance's first Distinguished Contribution Award. He holds an honorary Research Associate position at the University of California at San Diego and sits on the Board of Directors of Alliance Pharmaceutical Corp.

Glucan, a 1-3-polyglucosidic component of the cell wall of Saccharomyces cerevisiae, was evaluated for its ability to alter survival in rats with induced intraabdominal sepsis. In four groups, each of 15 rats, the bacteriological flora was changed into that of humans by giving the animals a meat chew. Intraabdominal sepsis was induced by resecting 1 cm of the intestine and reinplanting it in the abdominal cavity after reestablishing the intestinal continuity by one-layer end-to-end anastomosis. The rats were injected with either glucan or isovolumetric saline or benzylpenicillin or glucan plus benzylpenicillin. The results indicate no significant difference in mortality rate between the groups treated with either glucan or benzylpenicillin on the one hand and, on the other, the group given saline alone. However, the group treated with glucan plus benzylpenicillin differed significantly from the control group given just saline. The bacterial flora did not seem to be influenced by glucan administration. It is concluded that glucan has a clear effect on the survival rate of rats with induced peritonitis, probably by enhancing the activities of the reticuloendothelial system – an important part of the total host resistance.

6 renal transplant patients, seen at the Mayo Clinic between July 1982 and April 1983, received Minnesota antilymphoblast globulin (MALG) for treatment of allograft rejection and demonstrated warm-acting ‘auto’-antibodies during such therapy. These antibodies represented xenogeneic reactivity in equine MALG, rather than the products of patient-derived immune responses, since they were not detected before or after the period of therapy with this immunosuppressive agent in any of the 6 cases. They interfered with crossmatch procedures for red cell transfusion, and were only variably removed by autoabsorption techniques. Heat treatment of sera containing MALG-related red cell antibodies was ineffective in abrogating their reactivity and also compromised the reactivity of some red cell alloantibodies which were tested as controls. Transfusion of ‘least-incompatible’ red blood cells had no adverse effects in 2 cases where it was necessitated by clinical circumstances, despite an inability to obtain suitable serological samples for crossmatching
