Retinal Detachment in Eyes With Boston Type 1 Keratoprosthesis

Abstract: Supplemental Digital Content is Available in the Text.Retinal detachment after Boston Type 1 keratoprosthesis is a serious condition. Despite the preoperative complexity of these cases, pars plana vitrectomy can be an effective approach leading to acceptable anatomical, functional, and Boston Type 1 keratoprosthesis retention outcomes.

“…A higher intraocular pressure from suturing sclerotomies may be considered by the surgeon to decrease chances of hypotony and phthisis bulbi. 1 Importantly, we suggest that small-gauge PPV offers a more controlled environment for vitrectomy compared with larger 20gauge sclerotomies, which is crucial in such anatomically complex eyes. The decision to perform a thorough PPV with peripheral shaving may offer decreased incidence rates of complications, but should be individualized to the patient.…”

“…We read with great interest the article entitled "Retinal Detachment in Eyes with Boston Type 1 Keratoprosthesis" by Clémence Bonnet and colleagues. 1 The authors examined the outcomes of pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) after Boston keratoprosthesis type 1 (KPro) surgery in patients with retinal detachment (RD). They interestingly reported outcomes based on anatomical and functional success, allowing to translate findings to clinically relevant implications.…”
