Retinal Nerve Fibre Layer and Macular Thicknesses in Adults with Hyperopic Anisometropic Amblyopia

Abstract: Objectives. This study compared the macular and retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL) thicknesses and optic nerves of eyes with reduced vision due to anisometropia with the contralateral healthy eyes in adults using optical coherence tomography (OCT). Methods. This cross-sectional study was conducted in Atatürk State Hospital, Sinop, Turkey. Macular and RNFL thicknesses, optic nerve disc area, cup area, and horizontal and vertical cup-to-disc ratios obtained using a NIDEK RS-3000 SLO spectral domain OCT device were… Show more

“…In this study, there was no significant difference noted in TMT between amblyopic and control eyes. Similar findings were reported in some studies [4,9,10], whereas Yi et al [3] reported that the fovea of amblyopic eye tend to be thicker than that of the normal fellow eye, while the inner and outer macula tend to be thinner. The difference in the results of these studies may be due to the experimental design, ethnicity, or refractive error.…”

“… 14 , 40 , 41 In contrast to these results, other studies reported that the difference in the macular thickness between the hypermetropic amblyopic and the normal eyes was negligible. 13 , 32 , 42 , 43 The same higher values regarding RNFLT were found in hypermetropic amblyopic eyes with a significant difference from the normal eyes. These results are parallel to some studies 8 , 37 , 44 and contrast to the other ones.…”

“…Numerous previous studies have dealt with the changes in anisometropic amblyopia with different results. 40 43 In the present study, the hypermetropic amblyopic eyes exhibited a thicker CMT, thicker average macular thickness, and higher macular volume than the normal eyes. These findings are in agreement with the previous results of different studies, which formerly demonstrated a greater macular thickness in hypermetropic-affected eyes.…”

“…Also, there are scientists like Kee (2006) Repka (2009), Firat (2013) and Yakar (2015) who claim the inexistence of differences between amblyopic patients and the control group in their studies regarding macula morphology [ 15 - 18 ].…”
