Retinal nerve fibre layer thickness measurements by optical coherence tomography in patients with sleep apnoea syndrome

Abstract: RNFL thinning was detected in normal-looking discs of patients with advanced OSAHS, but the extent of this thinning did not correlate with the severity of the disease. Longitudinal follow-up is needed to clarify whether RNFL thinning in OSAHS patients with normal clinically appearing optic nerves will eventually lead to glaucoma.

“…Of these 19 articles, 4 contained no useful data for meta-analysis, and 5 only investigated macular fovea thickness or choroidal thickness, and so they were not suitable for inclusion. The remaining 10 case-controlled studies were included in the final meta-analysis [6,7,8,11,17,18,19,20,21,22]. …”

“…Four studies were performed in Turkey [11,17,20,22], 3 in Spain [8,18,19], and 1 each in Taiwan [7], China [21], and Israel [6]. The mean age of the patients ranged from 40 to 67 years, and the percentage of men ranged from 40 to 95%.…”

“…Several studies have found that the RNFL thickness levels in patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome are decreased compared with control subjects. 49,50 Different polysomnography parameters are also associated with the RNFL thickness in patients with normal-tension glaucoma or normal-tension glaucoma with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome. One hypothesis is that the chronic low oxygen saturation index can damage the retinal tissue, leading to RNFL thinning.…”

“…However, foveal thickness and total macular volume were not correlated. Sagiv et al [25] reported that the RNFL thickness is reduced in the superior and inferior quadrants of patients with advanced OSA syndrome. The reduction was less than 5.2 µm, however, which is a small difference and may be due to the variability of spectral domain OCT [25,26,27,28].…”
