Agriculture is the backbone of the Ghanaian economy and serve as a source of employment, income generation and poverty reduction for many people in the agricultural value chain. Agriculture over the years has contributed significantly to Gross Domestic Product (GDP) until recently when the performance of the sector and the contribution to GDP began to dwindled. With the current economic challenges after COVID-19, high fuel costs and ravaging food prices, every effort should be put in place to increase food production to reduce food importation which put pressure on the local currency and drives food prices high. The introduction of the Planting for Food and Jobs (PFJ) policy was to boost agricultural productivity, eliminate hunger, reduce poverty, achieve food sufficiency and reduce unemployment. The policy is also to helps achieve the Sustainable Development Goal 1- No Poverty and Goal 2 - Zero hunger especially in this post-COVID era. This paper was carried out by reviewing policy documents, articles and interacting with certain stakeholders on the Planting for Food and Jobs initiative. The PFJ policy hinges on five pillars namely: improved seeds, fertilizer supply, dedicated extension services; market, and e-agriculture. However, the policy is flawed with many challenges. The review showed that the policy lacks clear direction as regards its implementation. Key implementation features such as provision of irrigation facilities, introduction of mechanization services, dedicated market for farmers’ produce and land tenure systems among others were major issues. It was also observed that there were poor monitoring and evaluation, corrupt practices such as the diversion of improved seeds and fertilizers, high cost of farm inputs and lack of sustainability plan as in the case of previous interventions. This article will, therefore, help policymakers and the government to review and focus on key areas of the policy that will improve food production, create jobs, ensure food security and transform the general economy.

Indonesia's rice crop production growth will possibly always increase every year. However, the direction of growth in production and the area of harvest which increases is inversely proportional to the condition of decreasing productivity growth, which is known as productivity inequality. Efforts to solve these problems are through partnerships with the government and the private sector. The purpose of this study is (1) to analyze the characteristics of Indonesian farmers following the partnership, (2) to analyze the factors that influenced Indonesian rice farmers to join contract farming, and (3) to measure the impact of the participation of Indonesian rice farmers in contract farming on farmer household income. This study used secondary data from the Rice Plant Business Household Survey 2014 (SPD 2014) conducted by the Central Statistics Agency with a total sample of 87,330 samples. Data were analyzed using logistic regression and propensity score matching, which resulted in (1) There are differences in characteristics of partner farmers in Indonesia including age, education, gender, participation in SLPTT, income, and a land area used; (2) There are four variables that significantly influence farmers in participating are age, education level, production costs, and the participation of institutional farmers; (3) The participation of farmers in partnerships has a positive impact on the income of rice farmers in Indonesia.

Contract farming is an innovative institutional arrangement with potential benefits to the livelihoods of value chain actors. However, there are mixed results in the literature on the extent to which participation in contracts contributes to farm efficiency and optimal use of available technology. This study estimated and compared technical efficiency (TE) and technology gap ratios (TGRs) between contracted and non-contracted farmers of chili pepper and spider plants in rural areas of Kenya. The study used both qualitative and quantitative data from a multistage sample of 300 vegetable farmers. The stochastic frontier and two-limit Tobit models were applied to analyze TE and its determinants, respectively. Further, a metafrontier method was used to estimate TGRs. Results showed that, for both spider plant and chili, contract participants had higher mean TE with respect to the metafrontier (0.66 and 0.24) compared to non-participants (0.12 and 0.15), respectively. Based on the positive effect of contract farming on TE, this study emphasizes the need for targeted interventions that reduce the bottlenecks that hinder effective participation in contracts.
