Retrograde and oscillatory shear increase across the menopause transition

Abstract: Declines in endothelial function can take place rapidly across the menopause transition, placing women at heightened risk for atherosclerosis. Disturbed patterns of conduit artery shear, characterized by greater oscillatory and retrograde shear, are associated with endothelial dysfunction but have yet to be described across menopause. Healthy women, who were not on hormone therapy or contraceptives, were classified into early perimenopausal, late perimenopausal, and early postmenopausal stage. Resting antegrad… Show more

“…Low mean shear stress may facilitate early atheroma by reducing mass transport from the arterial wall, which is one of the primary reasons exercise, an intermittent episodic high shear stress stimulus, is vasoprotective in nature (Caro et al 1971). Furthermore, OSS is enhanced with ageing (Casey et al 2012), pre-eclampsia (Scholten et al 2014), menopause (Somani et al 2019) and anabolic steroid use (de Souza et al 2019). To examine the causality of OSS it can be experimentally induced in otherwise healthy upstream arteries by inflating a pneumatic cuff on the forearm to a moderate pressure (ß50-75 mmHg; Thijssen et al 2009;Tremblay et al 2019a).…”
