Retrospective audit of 957 consecutive 18F-FDG PET–CT scans compared to CT and MRI in 493 patients with different histological subtypes of bone and soft tissue sarcoma

Abstract: BackgroundThe use of 18F-FDG PET–CT (PET–CT) is widespread in many cancer types compared to sarcoma. We report a large retrospective audit of PET–CT in bone and soft tissue sarcoma with varied grade in a single multi-disciplinary centre. We also sought to answer three questions. Firstly, the correlation between sarcoma sub-type and grade with 18FDG SUVmax, secondly, the practical uses of PET–CT in the clinical setting of staging (during initial diagnosis), restaging (new baseline prior to definitive interventi… Show more

“…The obtained results were su cient to conclude that performing biopsy or surgical resection in patients with suspected malignant disease should be done with caution. Moreover, it was established that assessment using the PET/CT regression model prior to clinical decision might complement radiologic tomography, which is consistent with previous research [33].…”

“…18 F-FDG PET/CT provides more accurate anatomical localization of metabolic abnormalities compared to 18 F-FDG PET. Therefore, recently, 18 F-FDG PET/CT is becoming more widely used in daily practice for the initial staging of ES/PNET [14]. However, there has been no study examining the association between bone marrow involvement and 18 F-FDG PET/ CT findings.…”

“…The use of 18 F-FDG PET/CT for staging and restaging STS, with a sensitivity and specificity of up to 98% and 97% in the detection of distant metastases, has been described in several published reports [13][14][15][16]. The assessment of the response to chemotherapy [17][18][19] and prognostication [20] are additional fields of application.…”
