Retrospective Study on the Diagnostic Value of Full-Thickness Biopsies from the Stomach and Intestines of Dogs with Chronic Gastrointestinal Disease Symptoms

Abstract: Abstract. An evaluation of histologic findings in full-thickness biopsies from the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) from 64 dogs with chronic GIT disease symptoms was performed. In the majority of cases (38/64; 59%), intestinal lymphangiectasia and mucosal edema of unknown etiology were present. In 10 dogs (16%) an eosinophilic colitis, either alone or together with gastritis and/or enteritis, was found. In 5 dogs (8%) lymphocytic-plasmacytic enteritis or enterocolitis was diagnosed. Five dogs (8%) had an intestin… Show more

“…A gastrointestinal mass was documented by abdominal imaging, and importantly, evidence of bowel perforation was found in 1 case. As with other gastrointestinal diseases, 23 our findings suggest that endoscopically obtained biopsies are useful to obtain a definitive diagnosis. Endoscopy is recommended as a less invasive diagnostic procedure than exploratory celiotomy, with the advantage of allowing intraluminal lesion visualization without celiotomy.…”

“…Every effort must be made to obtain biopsy samples from as deep in the lamina propria as possible so that accurate differentiation is possible on histological examination (Tams and Webb 2011). On the other hand, full-thickness biopsy is still considered superior to endoscopic biopsy (Kleinschmidt et al 2006). In this lymphoma patient, endoscopically obtained samples were sufficient to establish the diagnosis of lymphoma in stomach, duodenum, ileum and colon, despite the presence of concomitant LPE.…”

“…Specimens were fixed in 10% buffered formalin, then saturated with intermediate solutions, and finally embedded in paraffin blocks. Sections were stained with hematoxylin and eosin (Jacobs et al 1990, Kleinschmidt et al 2006. Histopathological evaluation of the colonic mucosa was performed using the NIS-Elements BR 2.30 programme (Nikon, Japan) under a Nikon Eclipse 80i optical microscope equipped with a Nikon PS -Fi1 digital camera (Eclipse 80i; Nikon, Japan) in the field of view (20 x 10).…”
