Reverse microbial etiology: A research field for predicting and preventing emerging infectious diseases caused by an unknown microorganism

Abstract: a b s t r a c tTo predict, detect, prepare for, and prevent potential emerging infectious diseases caused by unknown microorganisms in the future, we have proposed the research field of reverse microbial etiology. We isolate and classify unknown microorganisms and assesse their ability to cause infection, an outbreak, or epidemic. We suggest a list of potential pathogens and propose a preparation, prevention, and control strategy to protect global health and global economy and to ensure global security.

“…Additionally, O. pekingense was first isolated from the activated sludge by Liu in 2008(Liu et al, 2008, which may be regarded as a causative agent for causing ocular infection (Borsali et al, 2011). These studies were in line with our previously proposed reverse microbial etiology (Xu, 2019), which was to predict and prevent a potential emerging infectious disease caused by an unknown microorganism. Moreover, Ornithinimicrobium may be used as one of the potential markers to distinguish Graves' disease and Hashimoto's thyroiditis from the healthy population for participating in the occurrence and development of the disease by regulating purine metabolism and pyrimidine metabolism (Zhao et al, 2022).…”

“…In June 2018, a routine surveillance of viruses carried by sandflies was conducted in Shanxi Province (112°5′–114°4′ E, 37°40′–38°31′ N), central China [ 9 , 10 ]. Sandflies were captured in light traps (Wentaitai MM200 traps, Guangzhou Changsheng Chemical Technology Service Co., Ltd., Guangzhou, China) and transported to the laboratory in Beijing on dry ice.…”

“…Several pre-identifications of pathogens have been reported to cause human infections. Reverse microbial etiology is one way to study emerging infectious, and the methods of this study followed previous presented procedures ( Xu, 2019 ). When emerging infectious diseases affect plants, primarily commercial crops, it can cause substantial economic losses.…”
