This paper provides a second update to the review of reversible deactivation radical polymerization achieved with thiocarbonylthio compounds (ZC(=S)SR) by a mechanism of reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) that was published in June 2005 (Aust. J. Chem. 2005, 58, 379-410). The first update was published in November 2006 (Aust. J. Chem. 2006, 59, 669-692). This review cites over 500 papers that appeared during the period mid-2006 to mid-2009 covering various aspects of RAFT polymerization ranging from reagent synthesis and properties, kinetics and mechanism of polymerization, novel polymer syntheses and a diverse range of applications. Significant developments have occurred, particularly in the areas of novel RAFT agents, techniques for end-group removal and transformation, the production of micro/nanoparticles and modified surfaces, and biopolymer conjugates both for therapeutic and diagnostic applications.

This paper presents the preparation of polystyrene functionalized TiO 2 nanoparticles using the reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. The surface of TiO 2 NPs with an average particle size of about 5 nm was modified by S-benzyl S'-trimethoxysilylpropyltrithiocarbonate in order to obtain the RAFT agent functionalized TiO 2 NPs (TiO 2 -RAFT). Subsequently, styrene was radically polymerized through the immobilized RAFT agent on the silica surface, in the presence of 2,2'-azobisisobutylnitrile (AIBN) as an initiator, to achieve the TiO 2 -g-PS nanocomposite. The characteristics of the as-synthesized nanocomposite were determined using FT-IR, EDX, XPS, TGA, XRD, TEM and SEM analyses.

Abstract. Noble fluorescence nanocomposite compound based on barium titanate nanoparticles (BTO), polystyrene (PSt), and terbium ion (Tb 3+ ) was synthesized by a combination of surfaceinitiated reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization, Friedel-Crafts alkylation reaction and coordinate chemistry. Initially, a modification of surface of BTO was conducted by an exchange process with S-benzyl S'-trimethoxysilylpropyltrithiocarbonate to create macro-initiator for polymerization of styrene. Subsequently, aryl carboxylic acid functionalized polystyrene grafted barium titanate (BTO-g-PSt-COOH) was generated by substitution reaction between 4-(Chloromethyl) benzoic acid and PSt chains. The coordination of the nanohybrids with Tb 3+ ions afforded fluorescent Tb 3+ tagged aryl carboxylic acid functionalized polystyrene grafted barium titanate (BTO-g-PSt-Tb 3+ ) complexes. Structure, morphology, and fluorescence properties of nanohybrid complexes were investigated by respective physical and spectral studies. FT-IR and SEM analyses confirmed the formation of BTO-g-PSt-Tb 3+ nanohybrids. Furthermore, TGA profiles demonstrated the grafting of aryl carboxylic acid functionalized polystyrene on BTO surface. Optical properties of BTO-g-PSt-Tb 3+ complexes were investigated by fluorescence spectroscopy.
