Reversible Electrochromism in the Thin Films of Single-Transition Metal Phthalocyanines

Abstract: The reversible electrochromism in the thin films of single-transition metal phthalocyanines is reported. Copper and nickel phthalocyanine films can be oxidized and rereduced reversibly, when the film is enough thin, the scan range is well controlled, and the appropriate anion is used as the electrolyte. Especially, the cyclic voltammogram of nickel phthalocyanine films in a sodium nitrate solution is almost Nernstian.

“…Doping experiments were carried out with NOBF 4 in dry dichloromethane. The solvent was evaporated onto the mixture of polymeric phthalocyanine 8 and NOBF 4 at 77 K and then left to warm up to room temperature. The doped product 8a exhibited the IR vibration of BF 4 and 1060 and 1030 cm -1 [45].…”

“…Phthalocyanines have recently received much attention, especially because of their synthetic [37] and structural aspects [38], spectral properties [39], electrochromic behaviour [40] and electrical conductivity [41]. Also, their use as efficient photosensitizers in obtaining singlet oxygen is becoming especially important in the photodynamic therapy of tumors [42].…”

“…Because of their synthetic and structural aspects, spectral properties, electrochromic behavior and electrical conductivity, metallophthalocyanines (MPc), especially the lutetium bis-phthalocyanine (LuPc 2 ) series, have recently received much attention [1][2][3][4]. These complexes display unique physical, spectroscopic and electrochemical properties, since the large conjugated p systems in these complexes are held in close proximity by metal ions [1].…”
