Our article conducts a critical reassessment of one of the most influential cultural myths in Eastern Europe throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries: the nationalist definition of peasantry as embodying the quintessence of the nation. In order to evaluate the imagological scope and ideological implications engendered by this so-called ‘people-nation myth’, we focus on the Romanian culture, whom we consider fully representative for the Eastern European context. More exactly, our study employs a distant reading of the Romanian rural novel from the first half of the twentieth century, precisely the literary subgenre supposed to reflect the coalescence between the peasantry and the nation. By analysing the co-occurrences in these novels between words belonging to the vocabularies of nation and rurality, we aim at showing that – contrary to traditional historiographic consensus – nation building has less to do with language or ethnicity, and much more to do with social emancipation.

Revisiting the relevance of traditional genres: a network analysis of fiction readers' preferences

We investigate how well traditional fiction genres like Fantasy, Thriller, and Literature represent readers' preferences. Using user data from Goodreads we construct a book network where two books are strongly linked if the same people tend to read or enjoy them both. We then partition this network into communities of similar books and assign each a list of subjects from The Open Library to serve as a proxy for traditional genres. Our analysis reveals that the network communities correspond to existing combinations of traditional genres, but that the exact communities differ depending on whether we consider books that people read or books that people enjoy.In addition, we apply principal component analysis to the data and find that the variance in the book communities is best explained by two factors: the maturity/childishness and realism/fantastical nature of the books. We propose using this maturity-realism plane as a coarse classification tool for stories.

The aim of this paper is to present the benefits and risks of implementing corpus linguistics for discourse analysis. The authors describe the origins and development of Natural Language Processing (NLP) tools in a historical perspective and provide examples of their application in social sciences, particularly in the methodology of Social Communication and Media Sciences. Fragmentary findings of studies carried out at the Institute of Journalism, Media and Social Communication at the Jagiellonian University in collaboration with the CLARIN-PL consortium illustrate a practical approach to the topic. The article presents the application of NLP tools in the analysis of the corpus of parliamentary discourse from 1989-2019 in terms of determinants for the institutionalization of civic dialogue in Poland and also in the comparative analysis of ulticulturalism in the city council discourse and media discourse in Krakow between 2014–2018 (7 th term of the Krakow City Council). The authors indicate in which phase and at which stage of communication research the use of computational linguistics can support the conclusion.
