In this paper we review and discuss, in a synthetic historical way, the main results obtained on Alpine metamorphism in the western Alps. First, we describe the finite metamorphic architecture of the western Alps and discuss its relationships with subduction and collision processes. Second, we portray the progressive metamorphic evolution through time and space with the presentation of 5 metamorphic maps corresponding to critical orogenic periods, namely 85-65 Ma, 60-50 Ma, 48-40 Ma, 38-33 Ma and 30-20 Ma. We underline the lack of temporal data on high-pressure/low-temperature metamorphic rocks as well as the severe uncertainties on the sizes of rock units that have recorded the same metamorphic history (i.e. coherent P-T-t/deformation trajectories). We discuss the role of subduction-driven metamorphism in ocean-derived protoliths and the conflicting models that account for the diachrony of continental subductions in the western Alps. Dans un premier temps nous décrivons l'architecture métamor-phique finie des Alpes occidentales et son interprétation en termes de processus de subduction et de collision. Dans un deuxième temps, nous illustrons l'évolution métamorphique dans le temps et l'espace par la présentation de 5 cartes mé-tamorphiques temporelles correspondant à des périodes critiques de l'orogenèse, et plus particulièrement Ma. Nous soulignons le cruel manque de données temporelles sur le métamor-phisme de haute-pression et basse-température ainsi que les sévères incertitudes qui existent sur les dimensions des unités qui ont subi des histoires métamorphiques similaires (trajectoires P-T-t/déformation cohérentes). Nous discutons le rôle de la subduction comme moteur du métamorphisme des roches d'origine océanique ainsi que les contradictions qui existent entre les modèles qui rendent compte du caractère diachronique des subductions continentales dans les Alpes occidentales.

Passive margin subduction and the dynamics of collisional orogenesis

Continental passive margins are characterized by a wide variety of geometries and widths. Whether these variations have an influence on subsequent dynamics of orogenesis is unresolved. To investigate, a series of upper mantle numerical experiments were performed with systematically varied continental margin widths and geometries. Results show that the vertical geometry of subducting continental margin crust controls both crustal and mantle lithosphere deformation. On both scales, end‐members can be identified. Namely, break‐off versus delamination of continental mantle lithosphere and double vergence versus single vergence of crustal thrust fronts form as a direct result of passive margin geometry. We find that the subduction of upper crust to depths >100 km promotes lithospheric delamination and is facilitated by an extended passive margin. Modeled orogens show decreasing upper plate deformation with increasing margin width. These results suggest that along‐strike deformational variation within orogens may develop due to precollision passive margin geometry.
