Review of the ecology of Crangon hakodatei Rathbun, 1902 in the Yellow Sea and Bohai Gulf

Abstract

The brown shrimp, Crangon hakodatei Rathbun, 1902, is a common species in northwestern Pacific waters. Based on an investigation of references since the 1950s, we studied the ecological features of this commercially important shrimp. The results show, that the species has a long reproductive period with ovigerous females throughout the year and two discrete peaks in the spawning season, i.e., in spring and in autumn. Its sex ratio also shows significant seasonal variation. This shrimp is a keystone species in the demersal trophic pathways in the northern Chinese seas. It occupies an intermediate position in the food web, acting both as an important food resource for flatfishes on a higher trophic level, and as a predator upon the early life stages of those flatfishes. RÉSUMÉLa crevette, Crangon hakodatei Rathbun, 1902 est une espèce commune dans les eaux du Pacifique nord-ouest. A partir d'une investigation dans les références depuis les années 1950, nous avons étudié les traits écologiques de cette crevette commercialement importante. Les résultats montrent que l'espèce a une longue période de reproduction avec des femelles ovigères tout le long de l'année et deux pics discrets dans la saison de ponte au printemps et en automne. Son sex-ratio montre aussi des variations saisonnières significatives. Cette crevette est une espèce clé dans les voies trophiques démersales dans le nord de la mer de Chine. Elle occupe une position intermédiaire dans la chaîne trophique, agissant à la fois comme une source alimentaire importante pour les poissons plats à un niveau trophique supérieur, et comme un prédateur sur les jeunes stades de ces poissons plats.Mots clés. -Crangon hakodatei, distribution et migration, composition alimentaire, structure de la population 3
