This study highlights an innovative piece of hybrid technology, whereby the combination of anaerobic and aerobic processes into a single reactor, namely, the integrated anaerobic–aerobic bioreactor (IAAB) can surpass the limits of conventional methods treating palm oil mill effluent (POME). Optimisation of IAAB using SuperPro Designer V9 simulator for maximum biogas yield while addressing its economic and environmental trade-offs was conducted for the first time. Parameters such as hydraulic retention time (HRT) and organic loading rate (OLR) were optimised in the anaerobic compartment from 10 days and 6.2 g COD/L day to 9 days and 6.9 g COD/L day, respectively. Furthermore, sludge recycle ratio was optimised from 20% to 50% in the aerobic compartment. The optimisation was successful where the biogas yield increased from 0.24 to 0.29 L CH4/g CODremoved with excellent Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), and Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) removal efficiencies up to 99% with 5.8% lower net expenditure. This simulation results were comparable against the pre-commercialized IAAB with 11.4% increase in methane yield after optimisation. Economic analysis had proven the optimised process to be feasible, resulting in return on investment (ROI), payback time, and internal rate of return (IRR) of 24.5%, 4.1 years, and 17.9%, respectively.

Palm oil mill effluent (POME) is a form of wastewater that is dark brownish and contains a high concentration of contaminants such as chemical oxygen demand (COD). Conventional biological treatments, such as ponding, are widely utilized and require large amounts of land to be occupied for extended periods to cure POME efficiently. The goal of this research is to examine the effect of 5, 7, and 9-day hydraulic retention times on the COD removal of POME in a batch mode utilizing anaerobic acetogenic treatment followed by anaerobic polishing. The findings indicate that increasing HRT improves the removal efficiency of POME treatment. COD had a removal efficiency of 53%, 63%, and 62% for 5,7, and 9 days, respectively. Seven and nine HRT days performed better than five HRT days. This study establishes the suitability of the anaerobic acetogenic process for the treatment of POME.

This article has as its objective a comparative study of the electrochemical treatment of slurry generated in landfills carried out with Dimensionally Stable Anodes (DSA) (Ti/Ru0.3Ti0.7O2) and Boron Doped Diamond (BDD). From the capacity planning and control (PCC), the central composite rotated design (DCCR) was obtained, whose independent variables in the electrolysis process were current density, time and electrolyte concentration. The removal of Total Organic Carbon (dependent variable) was 15.40% with current density 158 mA cm-², electrolysis time 15 minutes and 0.2 mol L-1 of the NaCl electrolyte using DSA. With the BDD, at the optimum point at 82 mA cm-², 18.5 minutes and 0.19 mol L-1, 77% removal of the organic load and discoloration of approximately 40% Ultraviolet-Visible.
