Onion waste, particularly onion skin, is a widely generated waste material, and harnessing its potential for energy storage aligns with sustainable development goals. Despite the high specific surface area exhibited by biocarbon derived from onion skin, its Li-ion storage performance is not desirable. In this study, biocarbon derived from purple onion skin serves as the substrate for accommodating cobalt oxide (Co3O4) through a hydrothermal method, employing Co(NO3)2·6H2O at various concentrations, and with and without prior activation using KOH treatment. The resulting samples undergo comprehensive analyses, including phase, morphological, surface, and electrochemical characterizations. The Co3O4 decoration on activated carbon derived from onion skin, synthesized using Co(NO3)2·6H2O at a concentration of 1 M, reveals a porous structure with a surface area of 702 m2/g, featuring predominant pore sizes of less than 5 nm. Significantly, the Li-ion storage performance of this sample surpasses that of alternative samples, demonstrating a remarkable reversible capacity of 451 mAh/g even after 500 cycles at an elevated current density of 2000 mAh/g. The charge transfer resistance of the sample (110.3 Ω) is found to be substantially lower than that of the sample prepared using carbonized onion skin biomass without activation. This research introduces an innovative approach leveraging onion skin waste as a template for Co3O4 decoration, thereby fabricating high-performance anodes for lithium-ion batteries.

Integrating innovation and environmental responsibility has become important in pursuing sustainable industrial practices in the contemporary world. These twin imperatives have stimulated research into developing methods that optimize industrial processes, enhancing efficiency and effectiveness while mitigating undesirable ecological impacts. This objective is exemplified by the emergence of biochar derived from the thermo-chemical transformation of biomass. This review examines biochar production methods and their potential applications across various aspects of the iron and steel industries (ISI). The technical, economic, and sustainable implications of integrating biochar into the ISI were explored. Slow pyrolysis and hydrothermal carbonization are the most efficient methods for higher biochar yield (25–90%). Biochar has several advantages- higher heating value (30–32 MJ/kg), more porosity (58.22%), and significantly larger surface area (113 m2/g) compared to coal and coke. However, the presence of biochar often reduces fluidity in a coal-biochar mixture. The findings highlighted that biochar production and implementation in ISI often come with higher costs, primarily due to the higher expense of substitute fuels compared to traditional fossil fuels. The economic viability and societal desirability of biochar are highly uncertain and vary significantly based on factors such as location, feedstock type, production scale, and biochar pricing, among others. Furthermore, biomass and biochar supply chain is another important factor which determines its large scale implementation. Despite these challenges, there are opportunities to reduce emissions from BF-BOF operations by utilizing biochar technologies. Overall, the present study explored integrating diverse biochar production methods into the ISI aiming to contribute to the ongoing research on sustainable manufacturing practices, underscoring their significance in shaping a more environmentally conscious future.

In this paper, results of research on the reactivities of selected biomass types considering their application in pyrometallurgical processes of metal production are presented. Walnut shells, sunflower husk pellets and spent coffee grounds were selected as biomass materials. Their use as potential reducers in the process of metallurgical slag decopperisation is an innovative approach to this subject. The thermogravimetric findings show that all three tested biomass types are classified as highly reactive. The time to reach maximum reactivity ranges from 1.5 to 3 min and, the lowest value is recorded for the sample of spent coffee grounds. The sample hold time of two hours enables copper content reduction to approx. 1 wt% for practically all the reducers tested. A longer duration of liquid slag contact with the reducer results in a decreased copper content in the slag to a value below 1 wt%. Copper concentrations of 0.5 wt% and lower are observed with a hold time of 4 h. The preliminary results indicate that there is great potential for the use of this type of material in non-ferrous metallurgy, which may translate into replacing fossil raw materials and thus introducing the principles of a sustainable process in this case of metal production.
