Abstract: This book is based on the proceedings of a symposium held in Uppsala in 1991 to celebrate Gunnar Johansson's eightieth birthday. The editors' aim was to avoid the common Festschrift form in which contributors review their own recent work, and instead to produce a volume critically exploring Johansson's research.
