Revisiting Persistent Salmonella Infection and the Carrier State: What Do We Know?

Abstract: One characteristic of the few Salmonella enterica serovars that produce typhoid-like infections is that disease-free persistent infection can occur for months or years in a small number of individuals post-convalescence. The bacteria continue to be shed intermittently which is a key component of the epidemiology of these infections. Persistent chronic infection occurs despite high levels of circulating specific IgG. We have reviewed the information on the basis for persistence in S. Typhi, S. Dublin, S. Gallin… Show more

“…Pursuant to German federal law, antibiotic treatment of livestock is restricted and closely monitored to curb antimicrobial resistance [ 52 , 53 ]. The treatment options list a serovar-specific Salmonella vaccine for the entire cattle herd as well as the elimination of carrier animals [ 54 , 55 ]. In comparison with the situation in North America, the repeatedly published low multidrug resistance and virulence of S. Dublin in Germany evidences a lower risk and better treatment situation for human patients with S. Dublin infection.…”

“…The persistent bacteria within the organs could result in increased or prolonged immune stimulation within the host (Gilbreath et al, 2012 ; Tang et al, 2018 ; Liu et al, 2020 ). Given these findings, the gene mutant strains have been considered potential live-attenuated vaccine candidates (Huang et al, 2016 ; Foster et al, 2021 ). Maintaining a delicate balance between attenuated virulence and optimal immunogenicity is a major consideration for the future development of live-attenuated vaccine strains (Gilbreath et al, 2012 ).…”

“…The positive control exhibited increased IL-6, IL-10, and IL-4 (Table 2) because S.P. caused in ammation, and the immune system tried to modulate the in ammation caused by S.P., similar to what occurs in the newborn animal [41,42]. None of the strains studied increased IL-6, strain A increased IL-10, and the IL-4 level was similar to that in P.C.…”
