Abstract

Integrity inspection is crucial in ensuring drilling risers’ reliable operation in the offshore oil and gas industry. This article explores the application of advanced ultrasound technologies, specifically Phased Array and Time of Flight Diffraction (TOFD), for inspecting drilling risers. Traditional inspection methods, such as visual, magnetic particle testing and conventional ultrasound, have limitations in detecting and characterising internal defects. In contrast, Phased Array and TOFD offer enhanced accuracy, sensitivity, and coverage capabilities. The article delves into Phased Array and TOFD principles and mechanisms, highlighting their advantages over conventional ultrasound by using these advanced ultrasound techniques to inspect welds, corrosion, and other potential integrity issues in riser components. Additionally, it addresses the challenges associated with inspecting fully assembled risers and presents solutions to overcome them.
