Rheology of granular materials composed of crushable particles

Abstract: We investigate sheared granular materials composed of crushable particles by means of contact dynamics simulations and the bonded-cell model for particle breakage. Each particle is paved by irregular cells interacting via cohesive forces. In each simulation, the ratio of the internal cohesion of particles to the confining pressure, the relative cohesion, is kept constant and the packing is subjected to biaxial shearing. The particles can break into two or more fragments when the internal cohesive forces are ov… Show more

“…In the BCM, each particle is subdivided into smaller independent primary elements or cells by means of a Voronoï tessellation, and thus the particle volume is exactly equal to the sum of cell volumes [26,27,29,30,34]. During the generation process, the average cell size d cell is fixed, but the cell shapes are random.…”

“…The average cell size d cell is fixed such that each primary particle has around 20 cells, but the cell shapes are random. As a consequence, the particle volume is exactly equal to the sum of cell volumes [19][20][21][22][23]. In the generated sample, interfaces between adjacent cells belonging to a same particle are side-side, and each contact is represented by two cohesive bonds.…”

“…Taking into account particles bulk properties in numerical simulations requires either to model the deformations of each particle and to consider their complete constitutive law (e.g. elastic [12], plastic [13], brittle [14], visco-plastic, etc. ), or to reduce the particles behavior to representative key elements through ad hoc and simplified models.…”
