Rhizopus homothallicus, an emerging pathogen causing cavitary lung lesions

Abstract: Introduction. Rhizopus homothallicus is an emerging pathogen that causes pulmonary mucormycosis. Case Presentation. We report a case of pneumonia caused by R. homothallicus in a 54-year-old type 2 diabetic patient. The organism was isolated from bronchoalveolar lavage fluid and preliminarily identified by fungal morphology and finally by sequencing of the internal transcribed spacer region. Conclusion. Mucormycosis may be ass… Show more

“…The clinical and radiological manifestations of pulmonary mucormycosis can vary, underscoring the importance of early detection and prompt management to mitigate the high fatality rates associated with this disease. Furthermore, there have been documented cases of Rhizopus species-related mucormycosis in patients with chronic granulomatous disease, affecting both the pulmonary and gastrointestinal systems (Taneja et al, 2023). Additionally, Rhizopus species have been associated with spondylodiscitis, a condition characterized by spinal and intervertebral disc infection, often accompanied by skin lesions (Opara, 2022).…”
