Rhus coriaria L. (Sumac) Demonstrates Oncostatic Activity in the Therapeutic and Preventive Model of Breast Carcinoma

Abstract: Comprehensive scientific data provide evidence that isolated phytochemicals or whole plant foods may beneficially modify carcinogenesis. The aim of this study was to evaluate the oncostatic activities of Rhus coriaria L. (sumac) using animal models (rat and mouse), and cell lines of breast carcinoma. R. coriaria (as a powder) was administered through the diet at two concentrations (low dose: 0.1% (w/w) and high dose: 1 % (w/w)) for the duration of the experiment in a syngeneic 4T1 mouse and chemically-induced … Show more

“…MCF-7 cells were incubated with IC 50 of abietic acid and pine extract for 24 h and flow cytometry assay was undertaken. The cell cycle phases, and subpopulation were set in gate, as previously documented [ 39 ]. The data in Figure 1 A, Table 2 and Table 3 show that the number of cells arrested in the SubG 0 -G 1 subpopulation increased significantly for cells treated with both abietic acid and pine extract in a way similar to known apoptotic positive controls of Raptinal-treated cells.…”

“…In the section, we provide a mechanistic discussion around using these compounds and their signaling targets. Plant derived-natural compounds have opened a new gate in cancer therapy due to their multitargeting capacity [193][194][195][196]. Melatonin is a hormone of pineal gland that is synthesized in other organs with higher concentrations [197].…”

“…The cytotoxicity of AgNPs formulated from Rhus coriaria on human breast cancer cells has been confirmed (MCF-7). 345 Deverra tortuosa (a plant of Apiaceae family) is identified as a wild perennial bushy plant that grows naturally in sandy and stony plains. 274 It is recommended for diseases that require diuretic, antiasthmatic, or carminative effects.…”
