Rice Husk Ash as a Renewable Source for the Production of Value Added Silica Gel and its Application: An Overview

Abstract:

In recent years, silica gels have developed a lot of interest due to their extraordinary properties and their existing and potential applications in science and technology. Silica gel has a wide range of applications such as a desiccant, as a preservation tool to control humidity, as an adsorbent, as a catalyst and as a cata-lyst support. Silica gel is a rigid three-dimensional network of colloidal silica, and is classified as: aqua-gel, alco-gel, xero-gel and aero-gel. Out of all known solid porous materia… Show more

“…The high silica content dilutes the concentration of all other components, including that of the bases. The mean contents of Ca, Mg, K, and Na in wood ash cited by Nkana et al (2002), Ozolincius et al (2005), Lima et al (2009), andRisse (2013) are much higher than in the RHA in this study (Table 1) or those cited elsewhere, by Chandrasekhar et al (2005Chandrasekhar et al ( , 2006, Gonçalves & Bergmann (2007), Pauletto et al (1990) and Prasad & Pandey (2012). Undoubtedly, the fraction of each cation in the form of base, salt or adsorbed to negative charges of solids present in the ash varies between the materials.…”

“…Several studies have been carried out to review the field of biogenic silica production and combustion of RH and RS as raw materials [24,50,51,55,[75][76][77][78][79][80][81][82][83][84][85][86][87][88][89]. Most of these studies have focused on applications of the rice husk ash (RHA), rice straw ash (RSA) and pure biogenic silica [50,75,81,[88][89][90] or the synthesis of advanced materials from RHA and RSA [50,76,77,90], influence of RHA and RSA on concrete and cement properties [78,80,86,87] or energy and power generation using RH and RS [79,82,85].…”

“…Considering the high amount of porous silica in rice husk (RH) and rice husk ash (RHA) structure, this residue has been considered as cheap raw source of silica in various industries [14][15][16][17][18]. Since RHA actually consists of silica (variable from 60% to 80%), it is resistant to thermal shocks (higher than 600°C) and has a low weight loss in the air atmosphere [17,18].…”
