“…One of these regions was the head of the Adriatic in northeastern Italy, where large elite settlements such as Frattesina housed craft specialists working in pottery, textiles, metal and an array of prestige goods such as glass-paste -and even elephant ivory (Bietti Sestieri and De Grossi Mazzorin, 1995) -and were in part sustained by foodstuffs supplied by neighbouring communities that were probably in some kind of client relationship (Bietti Sestieri, 1981;1985-6;Clark, 1986). A rather similar regional hierarchy has been found along the Ionian coast, the instep of the peninsula (Bergonzi, 1985;Peroni, 1984a;1984b): cemeteries indicate hierarchies of warriors, craftspeople and commoners, and the settlement of Broglio was a centre of craft production like Frattesina, in this case including wheel-made pottery copying Aegean wares, as well as of an agricultural regime that included olive and vine cultivation. Settlement structures in Sicily seem to have been comparable at this time (Malone, Stoddart and Whitehouse, 1994;Leighton, 1996b).…”

“…1998; Peroni and Vanzetti 1998; Levi 1999; Peroni 2000; Bettelli 2002). By contrast, Rosa Russa is a ‘minor’ site on a small terrace, investigated only by survey, which was occupied during the Middle Bronze Age and abandoned during the Recent Bronze Age (Bergonzi et al . 1982, 168–78; Peroni and Trucco 1994, 776–8).…”
