Risk assessment for forest fire in Brunei Darussalam

Abstract: The rise in global warming triggered by climate change and increased slush and burn activities particularly in Indonesia has been a major concern for deteriorating air pollution in Borneo regions in last two decades. Brunei Darussalam is facing increasing fire risk particularly during the dry season (February to April) of the year. The study is an effort to focus on the recent rise of fire events in Brunei Darussalam as fires can tremendously downgrade the quality of the country’s well-known forestry; affect t… Show more

“…Nevertheless, Acacia's are more susceptible to fire if the stem diameter is less than 10 cm [11] hence, with more new growths along the highway the higher chances of wildfires occurring. There has been attempts and plans by the Brunei Fire and Rescue Department official to create firebreaks especially along Seria-bypass where fire occur often [15], however there is no evidence that these plans are being attempted along Telisai-Lumut highway. Since forest fires usually takes place during dry season (February to April), this early detection of Acacia may help on alternative solutions through regeneration of the forest area [15], [16].…”

“…While some of these fires may have been accidentally caused due to the throwing away of cigarette butts by smokers (Shahriar et al ., 2019), a large number of them were proven to have been started on purpose. People may start fires out of frustration when roads become overgrown with vegetation, or to flush out animals for hunting.…”
