Risk assessment on defects in GIS based on PD diagnostics

Abstract: The paper, prepared by CIGRE WG D1.03 (TF 09), presents the guidelines for risk assessment procedure on defects in GIS based on PD diagnostics. The procedure, described in detail in CIGRE Technical Brochure 525, starts with sensitive PD measurement to detect the critical defects and follows with identification of the type of the defect and its location inside the GIS. This information taken together with other essential data from laboratory measurements, manufacturer's experience, design aspects and trend anal… Show more

“…The calibration voltage source uses YDTW-10/100 non-partial-discharge power frequency test transformer, which consists of control panel, anti-corona test transformer, protection resistor R p and anti-corona coupling capacitor C c . It can provide 0.001-100 kV alternating current (AC) output without partial discharge (PD), which can affect the calibration process [26][27][28]. After the test voltage is output from the anti-corona test transformer, it reaches the metal disk through the protective resistor, and the metal disk is connected to the coupling capacitor.…”

“…CIGRE's statistics show that about 30% dielectric failures of gas insulated switchgears (GIS) are related to design deficiencies [1]. Through the analysis of a large amount of partial discharge (PD) data from GIS in service, we also found that the proportion of PD cases caused by design reasons is high.…”

“…Various abnormalities that cause dielectric breakdown of GISs also cause partial discharge before dielectric breakdown. Therefore, detecting partial discharges (PDs) in GISs to avoid failures and ensure high reliability and safety is crucial [1][2][3][4][5][6]. Various electrical, mechanical, and chemical methods have been used to detect PDs in GISs [7,8].…”
