Risk association between scleroderma disease characteristics, periodontitis, and tooth loss

Abstract: Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is a multi-system disorder that can have significant adverse effects on the health of the mouth. The aim of this study was to investigate the associations between the disease characteristics of SSc, periodontal disease (PD), and tooth loss. Fifty-four patients affected by SSc and 55 non-diseased controls were matched for age and gender. SSc was characterized in subtypes and with the mean duration of disease and the Modified Rodnan Skin Score [mRSS]. Patients were surveyed and examined … Show more

“…In addition, infectious and opportunistic microbes residing in periodontal pockets may promote the progression of systemic diseases by the spread of bacterial antigens, Gram-negative bacteria, cytokines, and other pro-inflammatory mediators [ 5 ]. PD has been shown to be strongly associated with many autoimmune disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA), systemic sclerosis, and systemic lupus erythematosus [ 6 , 7 ]. Non-surgical therapies including scaling and root planing (SRP) with or without adjuncts are simple and effective procedures for treating PD [ 8 ].…”

“… 8 Moreover, a recent study showed that periodontal disease magnitude was strongly associated with mRSS and disease duration in a cohort mainly comprising patients with dcSSc. 28 Therefore, we propose that limited cutaneous SSc and dcSSc should be regarded as separate subtypes of autoimmunity.…”

“…However, stability cannot be considered as a primary outcome of orthodontic treatment, since a lot of evidence shows that retention protocols are the only way to avoid relapse [ 50 , 59 , 60 , 61 , 62 , 63 , 64 , 65 , 66 , 67 , 68 , 69 ]. Consequently, the choice to extract or not can be driven by other factors, such as facial type and the mandibular symphysis thickness [ 70 , 71 , 72 , 73 , 74 , 75 , 76 , 77 , 78 , 79 , 80 , 81 , 82 , 83 , 84 , 85 , 86 ]. These parameters nowadays have not been taken too much into account from the literature, however, in our opinion, those factors have great relevance in this complex and insidious decisional process.…”
