Risk factor for phlebitis: a questionnaire study of nurses' perception

Abstract: Objectives: to assess nurses' perceptions of risk factors for the development of phlebitis, with a special focus on the perception of phlebitic potentials of some infusion medications and solutions. Method: a cross-sectional questionnaire study, which included a sample of 102 nurses. Results: Nurses recognized some factors that may reduce the incidence of phlebitis; however, more than half of the nurses were unaware that the material and diameter of the cannula can affect the incidence rate of phlebitis. “…Nurses' knowledge and early recognition of risk factors for the development of phlebitis can reduce complications, which improves the quality of care, patient safety, patient satisfaction ratings and at the same time reduces the length of hospital stay and the overall cost of health care (Milutinovic, Simin, & Zec, ). In this study, 97% of respondents have knowledge that thrombophlebitis and infection are the common complications of IV cannulation.…”

In this study, An inadequately secured PIC also increases the risk of CRBSIs, as the pistoning action (moving back and forth in the vein) of the catheter can allow migration of organisms along the catheter and into the bloodstream (Marsh, Webster, Mihala, & Rickard, 2015).…”

“…The research by Ke and Wang (8) demonstrates that external application of mirabilite can diminish inflammation, relieve pain, and prevent infections. In some clinical reports, mirabilite is used to treat phlebitis of various causes (911). However, the majority of these reports are clinical observations, which lack support of the experimental data.…”
