Risk factors associated with multiple ovulation and twin birth rate in Irish dairy and beef cattle

Abstract: The objective of this study was to quantify the phenotypic and genetic risk factors associated with multiple ovulations and twin births in cattle. Prevalence and cow- and herd-level risk factors associated with ovulation rate were determined using 40,617 ultrasonographic records of the reproductive tract from 27,907 dairy and beef cows from 738 commercial herds. Prevalence of twin births was estimated from the Irish national database containing 23,658,351 calving events from 8,546,695 cows from 125,251 dairy a… Show more

“…Such traits are generally based either on hormonal profiles (Royal et al, 2002;Berry et al, 2012) or ultrasound analysis, palpation or examination of the reproductive tract Fitzgerald et al, 2014). Although a plethora of detailed reproductive phenotypes exist, the focus here is on traits that are, or can be, implemented nationally on a large scale.…”

“…Ultrasonography of the reproductive tract can also provide valuable detailed information on the status of both the ovaries and the uterine pathology (Fricke, 2002;Carthy et al, 2014;Fitzgerald et al, 2014). Phenotypes that can be derived from ultrasound include the presence of cystic ovaries (Hooijer et al, 2001;Carthy et al, 2014), scar tissue, multiple ovulations (Echternkamp et al, 1990;Fitzgerald et al, 2014), whether or not the cow is cycling and the tone of the uterine wall .…”

“…The natural frequency of twin parturitions in cattle ranges from 0.5 to 4 % depending on many genetic and environmental factors (Fricke, 2001;Fitzgerald et al, 2014;Sawa et al, 2012). Echternkamp and Gregory (2002) obtained around 50 % of multiple pregnancies after selecting cows for increased frequency of multiple ovulations between 1981 and 2001.…”

“…Echternkamp and Gregory (2002) obtained around 50 % of multiple pregnancies after selecting cows for increased frequency of multiple ovulations between 1981 and 2001. Holstein-Friesian is among the breeds considered more likely to experience multiple ovulations (Fitzgerald et al, 2014).…”
