“…The purpose of this study was not to focus on the clinical definition or pathophysiology of EOM. However, it does appear that our patient group is very similar to many previously published reports . Our study agrees with the clinical demographics and presentation of EOM patients in that patients are often diagnosed with adult onset asthma and nasal polyposis long before EOM onset in their 4th and 5th decade.…”

“…However, it does appear that our patient group is very similar to many previously published reports. 1,2,4,5,16 Our study agrees with the clinical demographics and presentation of EOM patients in that patients are often diagnosed with adult onset asthma and nasal polyposis long before EOM onset in their 4th and 5th decade. Our study also agrees that EOM typically presents as bilateral ear disease that is treatment refractory to typical allergy, antibiotic, and chronic suppurative otitis media surgical treatments.…”

“…Edematous mucosa causing granulation tissue in the mesotympanum is considered a characteristic of EOM. 5 Esu et al has classified EOM into 3 grades based on the middle ear mucosal thickness where grade 1 (G1) is normal middle ear mucosa; grade 2 (G2), thickened mucosa localized to the middle ear; and grade 3 (G3), edematous mucosa with predominant granulation tissue extending to the external auditory canal. 6 The granulations are recalcitrant to conventional treatment for COM but show exceptional results with steroid therapy.…”
