Abstract: Multiple risk factors for fractures in men were identified, but their usefulness for stratifying and selecting men for bone density testing remains uncertain.

“…Alcoholism is known to have negative effects on bone [16,36], but an inverse U-shaped association 296 between alcohol intake and risk of fracture at any site was observed in the present study. Conversely, a 297 J-shaped relationship between alcohol consumption and hip fracture risk has already been reported 298 [37] and a threshold effect (2 units per day or more) has been defined [38].…”

“…The common complication described in chronic liver diseases, and cirrhosis in particular, is hypogonadism [4,26,39], which also stands as an important risk factor for osteoporosis [10,15,40,41]. This disorder manifests in laboratory tests as hyperoestrogenism [4,9,[42][43][44], and a decrease in free testosterone serum level [43,44].…”

“…Among the many aspects of the interaction with the endocrine system, an interesting one is the effect on bone metabolism. This influence is manifested by the interaction with the somatotropic axis, the regulation of the calciotropic hormones -PTH and vitamin D, or even bone turnover markers such as osteocalcin, or C-terminal telopeptide of type I collagen [6][7][8][9][10].…”

“…In a recent meta-analysis and in the FRAX algorithm hypogonadism was identified as a known disorder strongly associated with secondary osteoporosis [79,80]. According to the latest Endocrine Society's guidelines on osteoporosis total testosterone measurement is suggested in all men evaluated for osteoporosis or considered for pharmacological treatment with bone-active agents [81].…”
