Risk factors for primary open angle glaucoma progression: what we know and what we need to know

Abstract: Identifying risk factors associated with progression of patients with primary open angle glaucoma is essential to our clinical practices. The level of understanding regarding those risks is suboptimal at this point. Prospective long-term studies are needed if we wish to better understand the disease and help those patients at greater risk of progression and blindness.

“…Both, findings are very important, as IOP is one of the main risk factors for glaucoma [23]. Even if there are limited studies, and ethnic differences could explain the conflicting results from different genetic studies, our results concerning this polymorphism are in agreement with the findings of Celojevic et al and Zhou et al [18,20].…”

“…The elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) is one of the main risk factors for POAG [23]. RGCs, because of their high energy requirement, are heavily dependent on mitochondria for survival and function.…”

“…Some of the risk factors for OAG have been identified; the most obvious risk factor is an increased intraocular pressure (IOP). [1][2][3] It has been proposed that vascular components are also involved in the pathophysiology of OAG. 4 -10 One of the first studies showing a possible link between (systemic) blood pressure and OAG was done in 1911 in Germany.…”
