Risk Factors Predisposing to Stroke Recurrence within One Year of Non-Cardioembolic Stroke Onset: The Fukuoka Stroke Registry

Abstract: Background: Recurrent strokes occur more frequently during the first year after an ischemic stroke. We investigated the relationship between patient clinical characteristics and stroke recurrence according to the non-cardioembolic type of ischemic stroke, and determined the predisposing factors associated with a recurrence within the first year. Methods: From June 2007 to December 2008, 1,106 consecutive ischemic stroke patients who were hospitalized in the 7 FSR stroke centers within 7 days after the onset of… Show more

“…An alternative method of defining the validity of a diagnosis of stroke may be by its prognosis, because individuals with a previous stroke have a substantially higher rate of recurrent stroke, cardiovascular events, vascular dementia and death than individuals of the same age and sex who have not had a stroke [5,6,7,8,9]. …”

Additionally, having DM and treating with ACEI/ ARB were also more prevalent in patients with RIS.…”

“…Moreover, significant associations between high cholesterol levels and early mortality have been reported in old stroke patients [32]. However, the association between triglycerides and recurrent stroke was denied in a recent multicenter stroke registry [33]. Nevertheless, the differential long-term effect of triglycerides levels on stroke and MACE according to age groups is rarely reported.…”
