The oil industry is a source of revenue and foreign exchange for an economy. Nevertheless, oil exploration is an inherent risk to the environment due to the pollution of water resources, especially surface water resources. The main waste is produced water which is increasing around the world .As a consequence,water pollution resulting from normal oil drilling, refining, distribution, and accidents is the principal concern of oil exploration in the environment. Oil pollution is associated with ecological contaminants such as heavy metals and organic compounds which are the primary contaminant of surface water resources. Often this results in toxicity accretion in the food chain, and their non-biodegradable nature is of great concern to both human and aquatic life. Therefore, this review evaluates existing knowledge on the effect of oil exploration on surface water quality, hydraulic fracturing technique/chemicals, and composition of produced water. This review also recommends further research on the physicochemical characteristics, analysis of heavy metals in water/sediments, and characterization of hydro-chemical facies of surface water resources around oil exploration sites to enable effective policy development.

Management of produced water (PW) is a challenge for mature fields like those of Sonda de Campeche in the southern Gulf of Mexico and for the future development of deep water fields. Past studies suggest that PW effects are local; however, the risk of widespread, long-term impact on the population and ecosystem is considered low, but not verified from the published literature. The study describes monitoring events done in years 2003 and 2013, considering physicochemical characteristics, organic and inorganic environmental measurements as well as comparing the prognostic results of an environmental and health risk assessment. The study examined ambient water samples and sediments for Al, Ba, Ni, Cd, Pb, Zn, V, Cr, Cu, Fe, and As, and also polycyclic aromatics compounds included in tissues of collected fish near the discharge area and a reference coastal site assumed to be unaffected. From a regional perspective, the ecological and human risk data suggest that the effects of the present discharge are not confined locally, but increased with time and space.

Abstract. Oil and gas exploration and production are two of the activities that potentially cause pollution and environmental damage. The largest waste generated from this activity is produced water. Produced water contains hazardous pollutants of both organic and inorganic materials, so that the produced water of oil and gas production cannot be discharged directly to the environment. Uncontrolled discharge can lead to the environmental damage, killing the life of water and plants. The produced water needs to be handled and fulfill the quality standards before being discharged to the environment. Several studies to reduce the contaminants in the produced water were conducted by researchers. Among them were gravity based separation -flotation, separation technique based on filtration, and biological process treatment. Therefore, some of these methods can be used as an alternative waste handling of produced water.
